Celebrating a Slithering New Year at Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur
The Year of the Water Snake 2013 only occurs every 60 years and this one has been to predicted to bring change around the world and within our homes. Le Meridien is going with the flow and bringing change to their buffet with a variety of specially created Chinese New Year dishes for your pleasure over the festive season. Traditional set menus leave guests with few options. Latest Recipe (Le Meridien’s all day dining buffet restaurant) though, is sure to please the crowd.
Besides the regular mouth watering temptations (don’t miss the Teppanyaki scallops and beef, the Indian section and made-on-the-spot waffles), a good part of February will see a rotating selection of Chinese New Year celebratory dishes. We tried six of them:
Salmon Yee SangSalmon Yee Sang is a mix your own salad bar, or if dining with a table of 10 adults or more, staff will provide table service. Always a theatrical way to begin a meal, there is no CNY that starts well without it.
Steamed Chicken Guava Dumpling with Oyster Sauce and EbikoThe Steamed Chicken Guava Dumplings with Oyster Sauce and Ebiko sounded fascinating - the fruity addition immediately took my fancy. The presentation was colourful atop crisp green leaves and crowned with red caviar.
Braised Fish Lips Soup with Fresh Crab Meat and Dried ScallopThankfully no shark's fin on this menu. A Braised Fish Lips Soup with Fresh Crab Meat and Dried Scallops though sounded more exotic. This delicious brew was filling and tasty. Must remember to stop to save space for the rest.
Wok-fried Green Mussels with Black Bean SauceThe Wok Fried Green Mussels with Black Bean Sauce had both hubby and I eagerly going for seconds. A rich savoury sauce covered the perfectly cooked mollusk and a deep fried noodle basket provided attractive mounting.
Steamed Sun-dried Oyster with Seamoss and BroccoliThe Steamed Sun Dried Oysters with Seamoos and Broccoli reminded me of those canned oysters my parents were so fond of for cocktails parties. The process of drying changes the texture dramatically forming an unexpected ease of bite. Daubed with algae and seated on virescent broccoli trees this is worth a scoop from the buffet.
Wok-fried Fresh Prawn Meat with Sweet Chilli SaucePrawns nearly always seem to be a winning dish if cooked just right. These crustaceans were crisp to the first bite and then succulently juicy upon second chew. Sweet and chili too are a dependable combination so put some of these on your plate too.
Oyster, Duck and Dumpling - Dishing up spoon sized portions allowing space to try it all.Jasmine Tea Smoked DuckWe smelled the Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck before it arrived. Tender strips of meat trimmed with a thin strip of peppered fat and a mouth embracing smokiness reduced our conversation to orgasmic 'mmm's. This was undoubtedly our favourite dish of the evening, if not of the year to date.

Seven different menus will rotate throughout the week during this festive season. On the 9th of February, Latest Recipe is offering a Lunar New Year’s Eve Prosperity Buffet Dinner, priced at RM138++ per person and at RM69++ per child or senior citizen. From the 4th to the 8th of February and the 10th to the 24th of February 2013, Latest Recipe will have a Lunar New Year Prosperity Buffet Dinner priced at RM108++ per person and at RM54++ per child or senior citizen. A surcharge of RM10++ is applicable for buffet dinners served from Friday to Sunday. Guests will also be treated to an acrobatic lion dance performance by the award winning Kwong Ngai Lion Dance Troupe on the 10th of February 2013 at Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur from 11.30am onwards.
Reason to visit: From the special Chinese New Year dishes: Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck and; Wok Fried Green Mussels with Black Bean Sauce. From the regular buffet: teppanyaki section especially for the beef and scallops; spectacular Indian section with a good variety of vegetarian dishes and; waffles made on the spot from the dessert bar.
